Port wines from Boplaas Family Vineyards in Calitzdorp have reaffirmed not only the celebrated winery’s reputation as a leading producer in South Africa, but also the age-ability of its wines following the announcement of two esteemed assessments.
Boplaas came out tops in both the Wine Magazine Report on 10-year-old wines and the 2020 SA Wine & Cellar Classification.
The Boplaas wines singled out were the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2010, the Boplaas Cape Vintage and the Boplaas Cape Tawny Port.
Boplaas port was among the 74 wines entered from 33 producers at Wine Magazine’s championship this year. Wines were tasted blind and scored according to the 100-point quality scale. The aim of the report is to assess excellence in matured, modern-era South African wines.
After being crowned as best wine in the lineup for last year’s report on 2009 wines, the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2010 scored 92 points this year. The same wine was also the SA Champion Port at the 2010 SA Young Wine Show. The wine received Veritas Double Gold in 2012; 4 ½ stars in Platter’s South African Wine Guide; and, was named Best In Class in addition to receiving a gold medal at the 2013 Cape Port & Wine Challenge.
At the 2020 SA Wine & Cellar Classification, Boplaas saw two of its ports – the Cape Vintage and Cape Tawny – classified as Top Cape Port. The rating is determined by wines’ track records on over 30 local and international, quality-assessing platforms for. It is compiled by Top Wine SA.
The classification furthermore puts the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port in its Hall of Fame, which lists wines that have received very good ratings for at least eight vintages during the past 10 years.
The performance of the port wines underlines Boplaas’s the lineage of excellence. The Calitzdorp farm has a long history of producing excellent wines from Portuguese varieties, including ports, thanks to ideal terroir and years of expertise. The Wine Magazine rating in particular, again highlights how the Boplaas name remains synonymous with the crafting of benchmark, authentic and age-worthy Cape Port-styled wines.
Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port is crafted much the same way as the lauded fortifieds of the Douro Valley. Only the finest Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Souzão is selected by the winemaker, from specific low-yielding vineyards. All the fruit is hand-harvested at optimum ripeness. Fermentation is done in traditional open fermenters, known as lagares, with intense manual pigeage.
The wines are fortified at the correct moment with the finest grape spirit and mature in barrel for a year prior to meticulous blending. The result is a wine in the “drier” vintage- style that is bottled unfiltered.
The Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2010 showcase inky black wine with hints of fiery garnet on the rim; while the bouquet slowly unfurls with ripe apricot, dried peach, a mélange of mulling spices, fynbos, intense plum, black hedgerow fruits and hints of liquorice. Intense macerated black hedgerow fruits, sweet apricot, plum, vibrant allspice and cracked pepper combine with a lengthy finish with treacle, liquorice, fynbos and meaty notes. The wine is best when decanted prior to serving as it is an older vintage. Any sediment that may occur is harmless.
These award-winning drinks are available from the Boplaas cellar door in Calitzdorp and at Boplaas’ tasting room in Klipheuwel in Klein Brak along the Garden Route, as well as from discerning fine wine retailers nationally.
The cellar in Calitzdorp is open Mondays to Fridays, 09:00 – 17:00; Saturdays 09:00 – 16:00; and, Sundays 10:00 – 15:00.
