Langenhoven Gymnasium, from Oudtshoorn, made a clean sweep in the SWD schools competition when they won the U/19 Super League, the U/19 Coca Cola Twenty 20 competitions as well as the U/15 Super League titles. Their performances was also a perfect farewell gift for their coach, Bert Hanekom, who only lost five out of a 115 matches played during the past five seasons.
In the U/19 Super League, Langenhoven Gymnasium (163 all out) successfully defended the title when they were defeated Outeniqua (156 all out) by 7 runs in a nail-biting final. An impressive bowling performance by Navada Jacobs (6/34) secured Gymnasium victory. In the U/15 competition Langenhoven Gymnasium also claimed the honours due to a superior log position upon completion of the preliminary round after the final against Outeniqua was abandoned due to rain. Uniondale High (158/8) won the u/19 Promotion League competition when they defeated Bridgton Senior Secondary School (156 all out) by two wickets. Sao Bras (121 all out) from Mossel Bay won the U/15 Promotion League title when they defeated Bridgton (113 all out) by 8 runs.
Langenhoven Gymnasium also had the upper-hand in the Coca Cola Schools Twenty20 competition when they beat Outeniqua by 4 wickets in the final that was played at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn. Outeniqua was restricted to 108/5 whereafter Gymnasium, who also played in the final last year, won their second T20 title in six years when they reached the target with 17 balls to spare thanks to good contributions from the bat by Grant Esau (23 from 28 balls) and Sheldon Deyssel (29 runs from 27 balls). Thirty-two schools participated in this popular competition.
Winrey Stoffels, from Langenhoven Gymnasium, who scored scored 264 was the top batsman in the T20 competition whilst Joshua Klue from Glenwood House who took 12 wickets with the best figures of 5/9 was the top bowler for the second consecutive year in this competition.
All-rounder, Jean Bruiners (400 runs), from Langenhoven Gymnasium was the top batsman in the U/15 Super League and he also claimed the most wickets in the league – 20 wickets – with a best bowling analysis of 5/5. Ineal Arries (Bridgton Senor Secondary School) was the top batsman in the u/15 promotion league while his team mate, Ivan Niklaas bagged the most wickets in the league.
In the U/19 Super League, Todd Walker from Oakhill School was the outstanding batsman when he scored 185 runs. Nevada Jacobs from Langenhoven Gymnasium, who took 17 wickets with the best figures of 5/11 was the top bowler in the league. Herschel Pietersen who took 14 wickets with a best bowling analysis of 3/35 was the most successful bowler in the u/19 Promotion League and Celester Plaatjies (Uniondale High) who scored a total of 123 runs the top run scorer in the league.
Point High School from Mossel Bay hosted the annual KFC U/19 Cricket festival during October 2014. With 32 participating schools, primarily from the Western and Eastern Cape but also from Free State, Gauteng and Namibia it is the biggest event of its nature in South Africa.
At the national cricket tournaments of CSA the SWD representative schools teams showed a decrease in overall performances with the average winning ratio average at national weeks that decreased to below 50%. A good individual performance by Jean Heunis from Langenhoven Gymnasium at the Coca Cola Khaya Majola week in Pretoria was rewarded with an inclusion in the SA Colts team.
Heunis was the SWD High Schools player of the season, Liam O’Sullivan (Plettenberg Bay Primary School) who excelled with outstanding versatile performances at the CSA U/13 National Week the Primary School’s cricketer of the year and Miceala Andrews (Bridgton Senior Secondary School, Oudtshoorn) was the Girl’s Schools cricketer of the season. From the 78 primary schools and 37 high schools in the province nearly 3000 players (U/11-U/19) participates in the province’s most popular summer sport code.
