Cango Wildlife Ranch has won 1st prize in the Most Establish Business category and are extremely proud to take home this award from the 2017 Premier’s Entrepreneurship Recognition Awards (PERA) – the Western Cape’s most prestigious competition honouring excellence in entrepreneurship.
It is the fifth edition of this annual competition hosted by the Western Cape Government that recognizes the achievements and potential of some of the Province’s most exciting entrepreneurs. By acknowledging and showcasing successful entrepreneurs, this awards competition is helping to build a culture of entrepreneurship in the Western Cape – and in turn, support the creation of opportunities by small and medium businesses.
This year a total of 227 entries was received within the five categories. Cango Wildlife Ranch excitedly made it to the finals. The 15 successful finalists had the opportunity to present their businesses to an independent judging panel. The judges said that very diverse groups of businesses entered and they were extremely impressed with the passion and commitment shown by every finalist.
As part of the application process for the Most Established Business, Cango Wildlife Ranch had to motivate topics such as Innovation, Challenges, Community and Green Sustainability – explaining how they tackle each of these aspects and make a success of it. Businesses who applied for the award under this category had to be operating in the Western Cape for longer than 54 months. Representatives from PERA visited the ranch to evaluate the validity of its application and thereafter a film crew captured the essence of what the ranch is all about.
The ranch is a privately owned zoological facility. Back in 1977 it was known as the Cango Crocodile Farm and was South Africa’s first crocodile show farm – a place where crocodiles were bred to be sold. Andrew and Glenn Eriksen purchased the farm in 1986 and started implementing their dream. A dream that would see the farm turn into the multi-accredited, award winning zoological facility it is today. A facility that changes thousands of lives annually by means of educating the public. We also pride ourselves of the fact that our business is extremely multi-faceted seeing us winning awards not only in the tourism sector, but for animal care, staff achievements and exceptional animal care.
Cango Wildlife Ranch is one of only a few facilities in the country to have obtained accreditation from the world leader in the zoological industry. Considering that the only other accredited member in Africa is the Pretoria Zoological Gardens, Cango Wildlife Ranch rubs shoulders with the best. The African Association of Zoological Gardens and Aquaria (PAAZA) is an internationally recognized organization with a world-renowned accreditation standard. We are also a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). WAZA guides, encourages and supports zoos, aquariums and like-minded organisations of the world in animal welfare, environmental education and global conservation.
The ranch is home to more than 90 species of animals and reptiles, open 365 days a year and has
a staff count of 150. It is due to the incredible passion, hard work and dedication of every staff
member on the ranch that winning an award like most Established Business from PERA is made
possible. Cango Wildlife Ranch will continue to fight for the survival of the cheetah and other
endangered species, as well as educating visitors about the plight of the these animals.
