Oudtshoorn, November 01, 2017 – Colan Sylvester, the Executive Mayor had on 31 October 2017 hosted the handover of the exhumed remains of Michael Lucas who was hanged on 25 March 1988, where after his remains became the property of the state.
Lucas’s remains were solemnly handed over to his mother, Makhata Ncwango, his two sisters, Wendy Ncwango and Bulelwa Ncwango, and also his daughter, Pamela Tu, by Minister Justice and Correctional Services, Adv. Michael Masutha.
Michael Lucas was 21 years old when he was charged with the murder of a bus inspector. During his trial, Lucas pleaded guilty to the charge of attempted malicious damage to property and culpable homicide. He was hanged in Pretoria on 25 March 1988, seven months after he received the death penalty. On 31 May 2017, his remains were exhumed whereafter it was handed over to his family on 31 October 2017, almost 30 years after his death.
The mayor said in his speech, “Oudtshoorn welcomes the remains of Michael back to his family”.
Michael Lucas will be laid to rest on Saturday, 04 November 2017. The funeral arrangements are as follows: 08h00 to 10h00 at home (668 17th Avenue, New Extension, Bongolethu) 10h00 to 12h00 at Nevada Hall in Bongolethu and 12h00 at the Roman Catholic Church in Bongolethu.
