AfriForum’s Riversdal proto team, which forms part of the organization’s Hessekwa branch, assisted the SAPS on 1 July 2021 to apprehend three suspects who were involved in the theft of cell phone tower batteries.
At 13:52 a member of AfriForum’s Hessekwa neighbourhood watch raised alarm after the LPR camera system picked up a suspicious vehicle that entered Riversdal and then exited after a while in the direction of Heidelberg.
The SAPS command structure of Riversdal and Heidelberg was informed after which AfriForum’s proto team was requested to assist the SAPS by following the suspicious vehicle. The vehicle, a Volkswagen Polo with three occupants, was later pulled over by the Heidelberg SAPS. Four cell phone tower batteries with a value of approximately R100 000 were found in the vehicle and the three suspects were arrested.
“We are proud of the fact that we were once again able to contribute to curbing crime in our community and make it a safer place. The SAPS’s faith in our structures is very valuable and it is always wonderful to cooperate with the local SAPS to make a difference. Furthermore, we would like to thank the SAPS for the opportunity to assist them and we congratulate them on their swift and efficient action,” says Johan Crous, proto team leader and leader of AfriForum’s Riversdal neighbourhood watch.
