Counting down the days to the 2022 Knysna Oyster Festival

The greater Knysna area is ticking days off the calendar as the much-anticipated Knysna Oyster Festival is set to take the town and surrounding areas by storm from 1 to 10 July.

Discover amazing exhibitions during the Art Walk About Knysna

Excitement is growing as the final programme includes not only the usual favourites, but fun new additions too. “A first for the festival is the Oyster Hunt,” said Festival Manager Andrew Finn. “A mobile device game similar to popular geocaching apps, the Oyster Hunt dares players to visit specific locations and complete challenges to gain points for the duration of the festival. The more points you collect, the closer you get to winning one of the daily prizes. A grand prize, including a three night stay in Knysna, will be won by the player with the most points at the end of the festival.” Details on how to enter are at

The game will lead players through some of Knysna’s most iconic spots and is a fun challenge for friends and families to compete against one another. Players can also visit any of the Savanna Oyster Hotspots as they play their way through the area. Some of greater Knysna’s hottest spots are bringing visitors to the 2022 Knysna Oyster Festival superb oyster specials, together with Savanna. Oysters au naturel or dressed in different ways, on their own or pared with a tasty tipple, the Savanna Oyster Hotspots are serving great deals during this year’s festival.

Get a free pass to two trail parks when you enter the Knysna Cycle Tour

Another first at this year’s festival are the ‘flying surfboards’ on display from Efoil Cape Town at the Boats of Knysna exhibition. And they won’t just be on display, visitors to the festival can book a session to learn how to fly above the water of the Knysna lagoon. Basically a surfboard with an electrical propeller attached to a mast, efoils have a large wing underneath that provides lift and allows the foiler to ride above the water.

Those looking for something a bit more physical can still enter the Knysna Cycle Tour. The two-day mountain bike event offers riders a new concept and exciting new routes. All entries will also receive a free week pass to two of the area’s best trail parks – the Garden Route Trail Park and Simbavati Fynbos on Sea, both offering amazing rides with fantastic scenery. But you’ll have to be quick – normal entries close on 25 June and late entries will only be accepted until 27 June.

If you appreciate the more artistic side of life, join the Art Walk About Knysna on 8 July. Take a leisurely stroll through Knysna’s historic centre and visit a selection of the fine art exhibitions that are taking place during the festival. Bring along your own glass and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine when you visit the various studios and galleries. You can also view local artists at work as they take part in the interactive “Circles in the Forest” art project and create individual Knysna-related works of art on a public wall in Queen Street during the festival.

For a different type of art, be sure to book your slot to get some Knysna-inspired ink done by one of the Garden Route’s top tattoo artists, or one of the guests from Cape Town at the Knysna Mini Tattoo Festival.

Cllr Sharon Sabbagh, member of the Knysna Municipality’s mayoral committee for finance and economy said that the town is looking forward to sharing the best it has to offer with visitors and residents. “I know that it’s said every year, but this year’s programme is truly packed with something for everyone,” she said. “Adventure, sport, culture, food, drinks and oysters. More importantly, quality time with friends and family. And we’re proud of the fact that many of the events on offer won’t break the bank if you plan on taking the whole family.”

The winter school holidays have never been as exciting as when you’re looking forward to spending ten days at the Knysna Oyster Festival. We’ve all been cooped up too long – get out of your shell and into the fun.

Be sure to visit regularly as new events are added to the online programme on a regular basis.
