Minister Ricardo Mackenzie from the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) recently paid a special visit to George Municipality, highlighting his continued commitment to supporting and promoting libraries across the province.

As part of the visit, the George Library hosted a vibrant and inspiring exhibition celebrating culture, creativity, and community innovation. Local Khoi representatives — Mounalise Olieslaager, Khoi Danaup, and Bernard Hannes — shared their knowledge of indigenous plants, discussing their powerful medicinal value and continued use in the region today.

Meanwhile, Vena Fredericks showcased a beautiful collection of handmade knitwear created by participants at the new Pacaltsdorp Library Innovation Centre — a dynamic, community-driven space that encourages learning, creativity, and connection. The centre now offers knitting and crocheting classes every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 to 11:30, providing a welcoming platform for residents to learn and share their talents.
The event also saw a meaningful gesture of inclusion as Mayor Jackie von Brandis handed over braille welcome stickers to James de Waal from George Libraries. These specially designed stickers feature braille dots to help make library spaces more accessible to the blind and visually impaired community members.
