The George Municipality Community Development section is calling on all organisations to join the effort to address homelessness in the City of George and surrounds. Despite numerous emails and calls, attendance at meetings has been sparse, particularly from key departments such as Social Services, Correctional Services, and Education, as well as various non-governmental organisations.
The Forum for People Living on the Streets (PLOTS) held a meeting on June 12, 2024, at the corner of St John’s and Varing Street. The Forum, coordinated by the George Municipality, aims to ensure that essential services are provided to the marginalised and vulnerable homeless community.
Several organisations, including Kidstop, SAHARA, Stop Trafficking, PASA, CREMHOG, George Night Shelter, and the Department of Justice, have been instrumental in addressing the issues faced by the homeless population in George. However, a collective effort is needed to make a significant impact.
“We need to think holistically about reducing homelessness,” said Jonathan Gelderbloem, Chairperson of the Forum. “The homeless community, like any other, consists of various groups including the disabled, elderly, minors, parolees, and individuals with mental health issues.”
The initiative aims to tackle social issues, empower the homeless through skills programmes, and ultimately reunify them with their families and communities. The goal is to help them achieve sustainable livelihoods and become productive members of society.
Estelle Fredericks, who coordinates the Forum and the project, emphasised the importance of involving more organisations and departments. “To make a long-term difference in the lives of the homeless and their loved ones, we need more organisations that work with families, children, and reunification services.”
A second parent training session is scheduled for July 2024 at George Municipality. This session, part of the skills training programme for homeless individuals with children, will cater to 15 participants and be facilitated by Kidstop. The Municipality coordinates all programmes and projects to avoid duplication of efforts.
The George Municipality urges organisations to make contact and participate in these crucial efforts to ensure that the homeless community receives the support they need.
