Drive-through donation centre closes to public, but donations still welcome

The George Municipality drive-through donation centre located at the George Civic Centre has been closed to the public.

The drive-through centre was a unique temporary measure,  implemented to provide a safe drop-off spot for the goodhearted members of the public, organisations and businesses of George who provided a non-stop supply of perishable and non-perishable items used by the George Municipality. Items donated were responsibly distributed to the 137 home-based soup kitchens in vulnerable communities across the municipal area and to a kitchen for the temporary homeless shelter at Rosemoor Stadium. These kitchens were serving two meals a day to up to 20 000 persons at the height of lockdown. Our soup kitchens have now gone back to feeding the vulnerable in their communities three times a week and the temporary homeless shelter has also been closed.

George Municipal Manager, Trevor Botha has thanked the Disaster Centre for manning this drive-through for the past few months and reiterated his gratefulness to the people of George who opened their hearts to our vulnerable communities.

Donations can now be dropped at the Community Development Building located on Varing Avenue from Monday to Friday between 9am – 12pm, at the door leading to the reception. The official responsible will be Ms Agnes Mntyedwa and members of the public can contact her on 044 802 2000 to make arrangements should they not want to leave their motor vehicle. No persons will be allowed to access the Varing Avenue building due to Covid-19 related safety protocols.  Please note, for accountability and logistics, our official must record your phone number to log on the donation register – a name and phone number is preferable, but we respect your privacy.

People using online grocery delivery services wanting to donate, can make up an online basket and enter the delivery address as George Community Services Building, Varing Avenue, George.

Types of items that continue to make a big difference include mielie meal, flour, yeast, milk, sugar, salt, coffee, tea, samp, beans, macaroni, soup powder, stock and fresh or frozen vegetables and meat. Cleaning products such as dishwashing liquid, sponges, dishcloths, bleach, all-purpose cleaner and handwash laundry soap and hygiene products such as soap, hand cream will be welcome as well as clothing items.
