GO GEORGE explores industrial theatre

The GO GEORGE communication champions know that their support is appreciated by the passengers, but to get cheering applause for their efforts is not something that happens every day! 

A new communication campaign that includes a visit by drama groups to schools, is kicking off a very exciting era in presenting information on the local bus service.

According to James Robb, GO GEORGE Manager, the communication team had to think creatively about conveying a message that isn’t always nice to hear. “Unfortunately, we receive quite a number of complaints from passengers regarding disrespectful behaviour on the buses and at bus stops. This, together with the senseless vandalism of the bus service’s infrastructure, prompted us to address the youngsters in their language to get their cooperation,” said Robb. “And it seems we have struck a chord, judging from the participation of the audience and the extent to which they absolutely enjoyed the fine humour. It’s early days, but if we find that this way of explaining the reason for rules on the buses – by putting the audience’s feet in their co-passengers’ shoes – is effective, we’ll definitely use it in future to bring home important messaging to the public.”

It was not difficult at all to find enough voluntary actors and talented comedians among the champions for a brief production. In fact, auditions had to be held to see who would get a turn in the first “concert”, and the natural talent surprised everyone.

The feedback from the high schools that have already been visited is overwhelmingly positive. In addition to the learners enjoying the witty presentation “in their language”, relating and taking it to heart, principals say that the message of respect for other people and public property is universally applicable and welcomed.

Die GO GEORGE-passasiersdiensbeamptes (“champions”) weet dat hulle ondersteuning en hulp aan die passasiers waardeer word, maar om juigende applous te kry vir hul pogings is nie iets wat elke dag gebeur nie! ’n Nuwe kommunikasieveldtog wat ’n besoek deur drama-groepe aan skole insluit, skop hierdie kwartaal ’n baie opwindende era in die aanbieding van inligting oor die plaaslike busdiens af. 

Volgens James Robb, GO GEORGE-bestuurder, moes die kommunikasiespan kreatief dink oor die oordrag van ’n boodskap wat nie altyd lekker is om te hoor nie. “Ons ontvang ongelukkig heelwat klagtes van passasiers oor oneerbiedige gedrag op die busse en by die bushaltes. Dit, tesame met die sinnelose vandalisme van die busdiens se infrastruktuur, het ons laat besluit om in hul taal met die jongklomp te praat om hulle samewerking te kry,” sê Robb. “En dit lyk asof ons die regte snare tokkel, geoordeel aan die deelname van die gehoor en die mate waartoe hulle die fyn humor geniet. Dis nog te vroeg om te sê, maar indien ons vind dat hierdie metode doeltreffend is, sal ons dit beslis in die toekoms meer gebruik om belangrike boodskappe by die publiek tuis te bring.”

Dit was glad nie moeilik om genoeg vrywillige akteurs en talentvolle komediante vir ’n kort toneelopvoering tussen die passasiersdiensbeamptes te vind nie. Daar moes trouens oudisies gehou word om te kyk wie in die eerste “konsert” ’n beurt gaan kry, en die natuurlike talent het almal verras.

Die terugvoer van die hoërskole wat reeds besoek is, was oorweldigend positief. Buiten dat die leerders die spitsvondige aanbieding “in hul taal” geniet, daarmee vereenselwig en dit ter harte neem, sê skoolhoofde dat die boodskap van respek vir ander mense en vir openbare eiendom universeel van toepassing is en verwelkom word.
