What is AIDS Candlelight day?
International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of May each year, to commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate victories of such as increased access to treatment and prevention services and PLWA’s that adhere. It is also an opportunity to promote education and awareness and to reduce stigma and discrimination by raising awareness.
The theme for 2019 is “Intensifying the fight for Health and Rights”. George Municipality is celebrating this day annually, to show its support to people living with HIV and affected families who lost love ones due to AIDS related illnesses.
What are you planning for the day?
This year we plan to focus on youth groups in the community. The day will be held in the form of a Musical festival, which will include spiritual messages, music items from different church youth groups, motivational talks, the lighting of candles, pledge and a speech by the Executive Mayor. The event is going to take place on the 19 May 2019, Unity Park in York Street from 15:00 – 18:00.
Who can attend?
This year we focusing on the leaders of the future, our Youth to come and assist us fighting the HIV stigma. We are inviting all youth groups to form part of this special event. All participants that would like to perform please register by the George municipality, Community development or contact Babalwa / Leachia 044 802 2000. We are inviting the community of George to come take part in fighting HIV stigma. Entry is free.
