The Nestle Ice Cream Strawberry Festival is a popular local family event, attracting visitors who come along to experience a day out in the fresh air in a safe, farm environment.
There are a wide variety of stallholders exhibiting good food, local wines and cheeses, fresh veggies, herbs and arts and crafts. Entertainment includes strawberry picking, strawberry and ice cream eating competitions, the strawberry-themed maze, NQtac strawberry food demonstrations, strawberry talk and tours, a live Algoa FM radio broadcast, the South African Breweries beer tent, the Nedbank Runners Club 4km & 8km Trail Run, live music, dance performances, miniature steam trains, bubble ball on the dam, pony rides, SPCA dog walk and a large inflatable kiddies area.
A large portion of the proceeds are distributed between a local charity and the Outeniqua Tourism Association. The OTA use the proceeds for the on-going marketing of the Outeniqua Hop Route to encourage more people to visit this wonderful part of the world. This year’s sponsored charity is Options Care Centre in George, a local organisation assisting those facing unplanned pregnancies and HIV/AIDS crises.
It has become tradition to host a Scarecrow Competition at the festival, where our local schools build their own scarecrow and compete for R5000 in prizes for their school. Entries will be on display during the festival.
