Sedgefield resident escapes bedroom intruder

A private security officer has been praised for his quick response to an alarm activation, saving a Sedgefield resident from a bedroom intruder.

Zweni Buyile

On Monday, 14 August the Fidelity ADT Security Monitoring Centre received an alarm signal from a Flaming Street home and immediately dispatched Armed Response Officer (ARO), Zweni Buyile who arrived at the property within minutes.

Whilst conducting a perimeter check, Officer Buyile discovered footprints in the garden around the house towards the back bedroom window which was open. He noted a light was on in the bedroom and called out. A terrified resident, Mrs Hampson, replied advising that an intruder had broken into her bedroom and stolen her cell phone and tablet. The suspect fled on foot as soon as he heard the response vehicle arrive.

Officer Buyile notified the local South African Police Service (SAPS) who arrived at the home a short while later. Mrs Hampson opened a case with the SAPS and thanked Officer Buyile for his quick response and assistance.

Fidelity ADT Branch Manager for Garden Route, Steven Green commended Officer Buyile for his quick response and bravery. “I am proud of the officer’s rapid response and courageousness which ensured that no harm came to Mrs Hampson.”

He advised residents to regularly test their alarm systems and to ensure that windows and doors, including garage doors, are properly closed and secured. “I urge the general public to request a security assessment with their respective security providers to ensure that they are safely protected, and that the best and most up to date technologies are in use.”
