CAPE TOWN- A Sedgefield man has been arrested for the murder of his wife and the attempted murder of a teenage girl after he allegedly set his home on fire.
Knysna police say the elderly man locked his wife and a 14 year-old girl in their home on Monday.
He then apparently set the home alight before he fleeing the scene.
Southern Cape Police’s Bernadine Steyn says, “The 14-year-old girl managed to escape through the burglar bars of one of the windows and fled to a neighbour’s home. The body of the woman was later found inside the house.”
The man will appear in the Knysna Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
The incident comes at a time when the Western Cape is battling with a spike in cases of domestic abuse.
In the last few weeks, several women and children have been raped and killed.
Non-governmental organisations have called for tougher sentences against the perpetrators.
