Blog – Life under lockdown – Online partying

A blog by Wandisile Afrika Sebezo

As South Africans are adjusting to the 21 day nationwide lockdown as part of the efforts to flatten the curve of COVID-19 spreading any further, there are a many things people out there have been doing to keep themselves sane, right in the comfort of their living rooms.

My favourite has been the online parties that have been popping up since the President declared the lockdown seven days ago.

We saw in Italy, one of the country’s most severely hit by the virus, people standing out of their balconies to create something beautiful, singing melodies and playing musical instruments. Together they created an orchestra from their balconies. Under the circumstances, it was amazing.

In South Africa and elsewhere, live music, streamed through online channels like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, became a hit.

For two days South Africans were spoiled for free, when popular South African DJ’s played live on SABC 1 on Friday and Saturday night. DJ’s like Shimza, PH, and Black Motions were among those.

For us here in Plett, on Sunday evening, Plett’s very own DJ Mjilo played live on his Facebook page, and his fans were able to listen in and enjoy what we normally call a “Sunday chill”.

I reckon there’ll be plenty of these going forward. Tap into what interests you, have fun and tell us all about it @AfrikaSebezo on Twitter and Ndim U Afrika on Facebook.

Remember to stay indoors, stay clean and keep safe. We shall overcome this!
