The second edition of the Rainmaker RollerCoaster was won yesterday by Siphe Ncapayi and Nik Cook racing for Team Kwano. The pair dominated the 500km point to point race, finishing 35 minutes ahead of the field.
Siphe Ncapayi: “I gained a lot of experience, especially from my teammate, Nik. There are a few times when you look up and just enjoy where you are but we had to concentrate in the front because of how hard we were pushing.”
Nik Cook: “Riding with Siphe has brought a whole new dimension to it. It’s been so enjoyable working together as a pair. He really got me through today. I had a hard day today, I had one of those bad days on the bike today and he did such a good job and showed such maturity in the way he rode. It’s been absolutely awesome.”
Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio: “I’m really happy to be at the RollerCoaster. I’ve been wanting to join a HotChillee event for many years now and finally, I’ve had the opportunity. Unfortunately, we missed out on the first couple of days. Today was an amazing day, so beautiful and tough at the same time – the perfect combination. I had a nice hard ride with the guys from the difference academies today and it was really great, I think they really enjoyed it to have someone like me pacing them and to be pacing them. It was also nice to see all the camaraderie and a big congratulations to Nick and Siphe for winning the GC.”
The event finishes in Plettenberg Bay today with a 98km neutralized stage, stopping at Kwano Cycling Academy in Kwanokuthula for participants to take part in a Qhubeka bicycle distribution. HotChillee riders, in partnership with the Buffalo Foundation have fundraised over 200 Qhubeka bicycles this year and today will ride the last 5km of the event with beneficiaries.
Oli Greatbatch, UK: “Great fun with awesome scenery”.
Julian Hardy, Spain: “The most fun you can have on gravel. Period.”
Dan Hughes, UK: “What an experience. Huge mountainous descents, lung busting climbs and super fast gravel rollers as we rode in awe of this supreme South African beauty.”
Next year’s event: 3 – 9 October 2020
2020 registrations open at midday on Friday 19 October 2019
Entry cost start from ZAR 15,000 (single occupancy in a dome tent including all meals)
