Urgent appeal to residents for water conservation

Oudtshoorn, 12 February 2024 – The Greater Oudtshoorn Municipality is issuing a serious and urgent appeal to all residents to prioritize water conservation as our community faces an alarming rise in weekly water consumption. The current water usage, especially in Oudtshoorn, has skyrocketed to an unsustainable 22 million litre per day, threatening the future availability of this precious resource.

The Executive Mayor of the Greater Oudtshoorn, Alderman Chris Macpherson said, it is deeply troubling to note that some households are consuming more water in one month than others use in an entire year. “In Dysselsdorp, where level 6 water restrictions are in effect, a resident was recently found wasting staggering hundreds of thousands of water last month alone,” Mayor Macpherson reported and added that such irresponsible behaviour is wholly unacceptable and poses a severe risk to our community’s water security. “Such wastage is highly unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. Violation of the restriction will result in significant fines and even the suspension of certain services.”

The Raubenheimer dam, currently at 80% capacity, is depleting rapidly at a concerning rate of 2% per week. Without immediate and widespread cooperation, we could witness a dam level below 60% within a few months, jeopardizing our water supply.

Residents are urged to take the prescribed water restrictions seriously and adhere to them diligently. The Municipality trusts in the commitment and responsibility of all residents to play their part in averting a water crisis.

If you observe any violations of the current water restrictions, please report them promptly to the control room at 044 203 7800 or make use of the Collab Citizen App.
