Gourmet Cycling Experience

Picture the following concept: you get to spend a few days in the Great Karoo, staying in one of the most beautiful villages in the world, while cycling spectacular off-road routes and enjoying unique culinary experiences and cultural activities.

Jeremy cooking class

For Jeremy Freemantle, mountain biking enthusiast and proprietor of The Real Food Company, and Arno Botha, owner of Prince Albert Cycles, this idyllic vision has been transformed into a reality with the advent of the Gourmet Cycling Experience.

The Real Food Company

The Prince Albert Culinary establishment serves tapas and bistro-style dishes and dinners prepared from only the finest local ingredients, and also sports a deli that stocks a variety of the finest meats that are only produced from sustainable and ethically farmed sources.

“We also offer casual, entertaining cooking classes for novices and more advanced cooks. We believe in a creative, innovative approach and believe in utilising only the very best local produce for our dishes. Our half- or full day courses guarantee a real Karoo style cooking experience,” says jeremy Freemantle.

Prince Albert Cycles

The Prince Albert institution prides themselves on offering everything ‘bicycle’, including parts, advice and fantastic cycling experiences.

Arno Botha has been operating tours for thirty years, taking biking enthusiasts on routes varying from recreational to super challenging. He has also completed nearly every stage race and cycle tour in South Africa and conducts his own tours through Namaqualand, Tankwa Karoo, Klein Karoo and the Great Karoo, all backed up with support vehicles and technical support.

“I would like to use my own experience to help both novices and advanced riders to enjoy the wonderful sport of cycling in and around our gorgeous little town,” he says.

Joining forces

“I have been conducting gourmet cooking adventures in Prince Albert for the past 10 years and offer visitors a sensory experience of cooking unusual dishes from around the world. I expose my guests to the different cultures of the world through cuisine and place a great deal of emphasis on the social aspect of cooking together and eating. The convivial aspect of food breaks down social barriers more effectively than any other social pastime,” says Jeremy. “I am also a very enthusiastic mountain biker and recently teamed up with Arno. Our vision is to offer a fully rounded experience with cycling, cooking, socialising and other adventures all included.”

Says Arno: “The cycling routes will vary according to the fitness levels and capability of cyclists. We will usually follow circular routes instead of out/back routes to offer more variety. All our routes will emphasise the beauty and vastness of the Karoo.”

Other activities include a range of possibilities. Arno and Jeremy will see to it that guests experience all the must-dos, such as the Saturday market (depending on what time of the week guests visit), the Ghost Walk with Ailsa Tudhope, and visits to the Fransie Pienaar Museum, Prince Albert Gallery and other retail attractions in and around the town. The Showroom Theatre is on the menu for activities, for movies and live shows, depending what is current at the time. Guests will be accommodated in different guest houses and hotels depending on their needs and budget.

The two packages on offer are either for two nights/three days, or five nights/six days, with a minimum of ten and maximum of twenty per group. Exclusive or private groups can be accommodated on request. Depending on the duration of the tour, guests can look forward to one or two special cooking lessons, and even a little surprise.

“The main emphasis of these tours is that the entire experience of the guests is intimate, personal and hands on. We want to ensure that this is an experience that will stay with them forever,” says Arno and Jeremy.
