Ninth Klein Karoo Klassique opens on a high note

Outstanding weekend awaits classical music lovers.

The ninth Klein Karoo Klassique began on a high note today (Friday, 11 August) with guitar sounds, top quality jazz, delicious food from the Klein Karoo and delectable wines. This festival of classical music, art, food and wine takes place in Oudtshoorn until this Sunday, 13 August.

CH2 in konsert was a perfect start to the festival and we look forward to more capacity audiences at recitals and beautiful music,” says Rhodé Snyman, CEO of Kunste Onbeperk, the presenting company of Klein Karoo Klassique.

Formidable classical guitar maestros, Corneille Hutten and Dirkie van Staden, opened the music programme in the NG Moederkerk, with music by Tárrega, Rodrigo and Bach. They also entertained the audience with well-loved, modern hits like Tussen Treine and Vyfster, as well as their own Flamenco inspired music.

Thereafter three finalists from this year’s Artscape Youth Jazz mentorship programme were seen on stage in An Evening of Jazz. Jesse Julies (saxophone and vocals), Naledi Masilo (vocals) and Brathew van Schalkwyk (piano) charmed the audience in Die Windpomp Restaurant Teater, the first restaurant theatre experience at this festival. Festivalgoers could also enjoy a delicious two-course dinner, prepared by Signature Divine.

Other music recitals awaiting audiences include: Vivaldi se Vier Seisoene herbesoek with Petrus de Beer (violin), Stanislav Angelov (accordion) and Schalk Joubert (bass and narration); Folk Baroque with the Camerata Tinta Barocca; Alleenstryd: Hendrik Hofmeyr Huldigingskonsert with Minette du Toit-Pearce (mezzo soprano), Lauren Dasappa (soprano), Jolene McCleland (mezzo soprano), José Dias (piano) and a guest appearance by Hendrik Hofmeyr; Carmen – in die kleine with Jolene McCleland as Carmen (mezzo soprano), Lauren Dasappa as Michaëla / Frascuita (soprano), Linette van der Merwe as Mercédès (mezzo soprano), Chris Mostert as Don José / Le Remendado (tenor), Niël Rademan as Escamillo (baritone) and Raimondo van Staden as Le Dancaïre (baritone); ’n Aand met Sulayman Human (also in Die Windpomp Restaurant Teater); Spieël-dans in die maanlig with Jana van der Walt (harp) and Rina Schutte (cello); Beethoven Tango with Zanta Hofmeyr (violin) and Charl du Plessis (piano) and the ATKV Afsluitingskonsert with Megan-Geoffrey Prins (piano), Tatiana Thaele (flute), Palesa Malieloa (soprano) and Philippus Hugo (piano).

On Saturday and Sunday, delicious wines from Grundheim, Calitzdorp Wine Cellar, Stellar Organic Winery, Klawer Wine Cellars, Villa Esposto and Cecilia Wines, cheese from Latana and chocolate from La Chocolaterie Rococo can be tasted at Liplekker (NG Moederkerk community centre). Light meals are served at the restaurant throughout the day and it is not necessary to attend a recital to enjoy meals and tastings. Coffee by Oudtshoorn’s first coffee roaster, Beans about Coffee, also helps warm up the winter days. A CD store is operated by Classics 4U between the festivities.

Various local artists and art galleries are exhibiting works, including Annie’s Art, Art on Track (Calitzdorp), ArtKaroo, Bottega Art Galery & Framers, George Sebastian Art, Oudtshoorn High School’s Jeugkuns & Fotoweek, Lisl Barry & Richard Henley and Sheena Ridley.

Tickets to recitals are available from Computicket, Shoprite/Checkers and House & Home and available tickets will be sold at the door.

Three conversations are presented after selected recitals: a conversation on baroque music with the artists of Folk Baroque, one with composer Hendrik Hofmeyr after Alleenstryd: Hendrik Hofmeyr Huldigingskonsert and a conversation with Charl du Plessis and Zanta Hofmeyr after Beethoven Tango. These conversations can be attended free of charge.
