With summer here what better to enjoy the glorious weather than with a glass of chilled De Krans Moscato Perlé 2016. The perfect summer tipple!
Still fairly new to the South African consumer, Moscato has a strong following in countries such as France, Australia and the United States (particularly California) where it is more commonly known as Muscat. In Italy you’ll also find Asti Spumante, which is a sparkling wine made from Moscato.
This niche yet premium varietal, pioneered by De Krans in 2012, has grown in popularity amongst the 20 to 30 year age group whilst enjoying a significant following with seasoned wine enthusiasts who enjoy a lighter-styled wine with brunch, dessert, or on its own as an accomplished apéritif. Winemaker Louis van der Riet describes the 2016 vintage as being a low alcohol (only 8.5%), yet full-flavoured natural sweet perlé wine. The perfect ‘365 days a year’ wine. A gorgeous sunlight yellow in colour with fine fizzy bubbles, the wine displays fresh tropical fruit flavours of litchi and apricot, enhanced by a hint of Muscat.
Intended to be consumed young, while it’s fresh and vibrant, this wine is best enjoyed chilled and is the perfect partner to apple desserts, fresh berries, summer salads, meringue pies and hazelnut based desserts. Although dessert is Moscato’s forte, it partners brilliantly with cheese courses, charcuterie, antipasti and even slightly spicy dishes. Its versatility, with a definitive balance of sweet and acidity, and the lower alcohol also make Moscato an ideal apéritif candidate, though it has certainly earned its stripes as the wine world’s most fashionable brunch-time guest as well. Available directly from the cellar and at most retail outlets nationwide the De Krans Moscato Perlé retails for approximately R49 per bottle. A value for money wine indeed!
