Agri Klein Karoo warned that it may take up to eight years for the ostrich industry to recover from the Avian Influenza outbreak.
An April outbreak in Oudtshoorn crippled the multi-million Rand industry as well as the region’s entire economy.
A ban on the export of ostrich meat remains in place.
Farms where ostriches were not culled are under severe financial strain.
Agri Klein Karoo’s Pieter Lodder, “I think the industry will recover. Except, it is going to take out a lot of farmers that will not be able to meet these structures. As it is, the new legislation is coming in- the EU regulations. These regulations are going to have a huge impact on the farming.”
