The Port of Mossel Bay celebrates seven years of Disabling Injury free days

[Mossel Bay, South Africa, 20 May 2021] At the end of the 2020/21 Financial Year, the Port of Mossel Bay reached an incredible milestone of achieving 131 858 Disabling Injury-free hours, this means that for 7 consecutive years, the port’s Disabling Injury Frequency Rate remained at 0%.

This milestone is directly line with Transnet National Port Authority’s (TNPA) Zero Harm campaign which was developed to not only promote and develop a safe and secure port environment but to also actively implement and promote a safety culture programme across the organisation.

Mossel Bay Port Manager, Shadrack Tshikalange said “The correct reporting of all occurrences by vigilant port employees to the port’s Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Department which always results in occurrence investigations and the implementation of mitigation measures is a direct contributing factor to the achievement of this milestone. This is an indication that the port is fully committed to ensuring that all operations are carried out safely and employees are not harmed in the process.”

The last Disabling Injury was recorded in April 2014, this is evident that the Zero Harm campaign initiatives which are implemented by the SHE Department every financial year have positively changed employees’ views towards upholding a safety culture in the port and having a safety mind-set.

Mossel Bay Acting SHE Manager, Quelynne Bruinders added “it is important to always remember that having a safety mind-set is primarily about doing the right thing, even when no one is looking because safety comes first in everything we do, not only within the port environment but everywhere we go. We applaud all Port of Mossel Bay employees for fully embracing the “Brother’s Keeper” concept, without your vigilance and dedication towards safety, we wouldn’t have reached this milestone.”

This milestone is also a reflection of the Port of Mossel Bay’s dedication towards the achievement of business excellence under safe working conditions to all its customers and stakeholders. This perfectly aligns with the port’s value proposition which is focused on meeting customer demands through exceptional performance.
