Mossel Bay’s Llewellyn Whitaker chosen for SA Surfing Team

Mossel Bay-based surfing international, Llewellyn Whitaker, has been chosen for the South African team that will go to the 2011 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games in Playa Venao, Panama, later this year.

The games will take place from the 25th of June to the 2nd of July, and South Africa’s team will consist of four men, two women, two male long boarders, two coaches and a manager.

The top seed in the men’s division is Gavin Roberts of Southern KwaZulu-Natal. Mr. Roberts was South African Champion in 2009, and was a member of the National Team in 2006. Mr. Whitaker will take his place as the second seed, with former SA Junior Team captain Matthew Bromley of Western Province as third seed.

“I’m really stoked to finally be representing my country, and now I have to go about raising my portion of the funding for the trip,” said Mr Whitaker.

The team’s preparations, training and attendance at the ISA World Surfing Games have been supported by a grant from Sport and Recreation South Africa, and by a R100,000 grant from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF).

Each team member will have to raise R 12,500.00 as his or her contribution to expenses.

In order to achieve this end, Mr. Whitaker has collected a number of exciting prizes together, which will now be raffled.

With only 150 tickets in the draw, entrants have a good chance of winning 2 X ladies cut-and-blow from D-Fine Hair Studio; a voucher for two adults from Garden Route Game Lodge (including accommodation and game drives to a value of R3,000); 2 nights accommodation at the Point Village Hotel; an accommodation voucher from The Point Hotel; a wetsuit from Hurley; or a case of 12 bottles of wine from Jakkalsvlei.
