DA WC to push for safer infrastructure along Voëlklip

In response to a tragic spate of deaths in the Herold’s Bay community due to the treacherous nature of the Voëlklip cliff, in my capacity as Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Local Government, I will be engaging with the Directorate for Community Services of the George Municipality, to ensure that the necessary infrastructure upgrades are carried out,  to provide greater safety along the coastal site.

Since 2015 three tragic incidents, have taken place at Voëlklip. The death of three young people in 2015, followed by a mother and her two children in October 2019 and the latest incident on Wednesday, 4 December 2019.

MPP Derrick America said: “I will continue to engage with the municipality as well as the community to prevent incidents such as these from occurring in future. I have consulted with a senior official at the George Municipality who has informed me that an engagement process with the owners of this land was conducted on Thursday, 5 December 2019. They have discussed the way forward in order to make this particular area safer for the community.”

“The safety of all communities is of utmost importance to the Department of Local Government as well as the DA in the Western Cape. We must ensure that the string of lives lost ends today as seven lives lost are seven too many.” MPP America added.

The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape would like to extend its condolences to the families and community that have lost loved ones due to these tragic incidents. As we embark on our road trips, I urge motorist to exercise caution and be considerate towards each other on the road.
