Phase 1 of housing in Thembalethu and housing handover in Protea Park finished

The first phase of the UISP housing project in Thembalethu is finished with families receiving the last houses in this phase.

Phase 1 of the UISP commenced on 27 February 2017 and was completed on 30 April 2018.  The size of the houses is 42m2. A total of 150 houses have been built and handed over.

Phase 2 of the UISP commenced on 19 January 2018 with the completion date being 31 December 2018.  A total of 251 houses will be built in this phase.  Construction of top structures is underway and no houses have been handed over to date.

The Protea Park Housing project was approved for 71 top structures.  Construction on the 71 houses commenced on 10 May 2016 and all houses were handed over to beneficiaries by 23 March 2018.  The EPHP housing delivery programme was used to deliver houses in this project with the house size being 42m2. Moreki Distributors was the contractor in Protea Park.

Lawula and Marnol JV (Joint Venture) are the contractors in Thembalethu. It forms part of the Thembalethu: Upgrading of Informal Settlements Programme (UISP). The contractor also part of the phase 2. The cost of a serviced property (with all municipal services) amounts to R43 000 and the top structures R111 000.


The Enhanced People’s Housing Process (EPHP) Housing Programme was implemented in these projects, which added a lot more value to the project because the participants were also given the opportunity to have a say in the product that was delivered to them. The normal norms and standards of the Department of Human Settlements are far exceeded in this project as a 42m2 house was built and the whole house was fully tiled, with a tiled roof, aluminium windows, kitchen cabinets, outdoor lights and more.
