Three more houses handed over – Thembalethu

Three families were elated to be moving into their homes last week Friday after the contractor for George Municipality finished three more homes as part of the 150 top structures that were awarded to his company.

Cllr David Willemse, Portfolio Councillor of Human Settlements, congratulated the beneficiaries on the receipt of their new homes and thanked the Ward Councillor, Cllr Ntombi James and officials for their hard work and involvement.

Lawula and Marnol JV (Joint Venture) who are the contractors in Thembalethu have handed over 110 house to date. This project forms part of the Thembalethu: Upgrading of Informal Settlements Programme (UISP) and is part of Phase 1 which consists of 1746 serviced plots and funding has been received to build 700 top structures (houses).

Lawula and Marnol JV (Joint Venture) have been appointed to build the first 150 top structures of Phase 1 and 250 structures for Phase 2. The cost of a serviced property (with all municipal services) amounts to R43 000 and the top structures R111 000.

The Enhanced People’s Housing Process (EPHP) Housing Programme was implemented in this project, which added a lot more value to the project because the participants were also given the opportunity to have a say in the product that was delivered to them. The required norms and standards of the Department of Human Settlements are far exceeded in this project as a 42m2 house was built and the whole house was fully tiled, with a tiled roof, aluminium windows, kitchen cabinets and outdoor lights.

Some of the beneficiaries of the current phase are front from left Clifford Madlokazi from Lawula and Marnol JV (Joint Venture) contractors and Nkosiyabo Mankayi (beneficiary). At the back standing are Cllr David Willemse (Portfolio Councillor for Human Settlements), Nosandla Gqetha (beneficiary), Cllr Ntombi James, Ward Councillor for Ward 21), Zukile Sikahlha (beneficiary standing in front of his house), Lisakhanya Zenzile (beneficiary) and Charl du Toit from Lawula and Marnol JV (Joint Venture)
