The Western Cape Transport Regulatory Entity has suspended 30 taxi permits of an association involved in violent protests in George.

An inquiry was held after four Go George buses were torched and several others damaged in the protests in August last year.

The taxi operators were demonstrating over what they say is lack of proper consultation in the implementation of the bus rapid transit system.

The inquiry made a ruling this week.

Western Cape transport spokesperson Byron la Hoe says the UNQEDO George Taxi Association operators were found guilty of violating the conductions of their licenses.

“It is clear from the decision that violent behaviour will not be tolerated. The provincial regulatory entity has the responsibility to ensure a safe and dignified environment for public transport users.”

The operators are required to surrender their permits by Friday.
