GEORGE (January 2016) – The Garden Route’s most popular family sporting event of the holiday season, the Great Brak Grabadoo, did it again! True to its legacy of the past 12 years, the 13th annual Grabadoo drew almost 1000 participants from all over South Africa. On Thursday 31 December 2015 Great Brak was a hive of activity with families, friends and even pets all taking part in this fun event. The development of the longer routes of this iconic mountain biking race most certainly spoke to the more daring participants.
31 December 2015 was an extremely hot day, but that was no deterrent to the highly motivated cyclists, all evidently in a festive mood, taking part in the race. Mimi Finestone, owner and organiser of the event commented, “We are grateful that the race was completed by so many participants without any serious injuries. Like previous years, we received many compliments about the stunning route and professional organisation of the event.” The changes to the 3 longer mountain biking routes were met with great enthusiasm. The routes were a little bit longer and a bit more technical. Gerhard Cruywagen, a participant, commented on the official Grabadoo Facebook page, “Dankie vir gister se lekker race! Tuwwe 72km roete, maar lekker! Bly ek het nie uitgebail by 53km split nie!” Estie Potgieter commented just as enthusiastically that she was thoroughly impressed with the beautiful route and the trouble the organisers went through.
Finestone went further to say “We are humbled by the support of the Great Brak community and local businesses like Peperboom Restaurant. To ensure that the event went off without a glitch the officials for the event were all from Greenhaven community and they were trained the day before the race took place.” For the first time this year the participants were able to enter at various outlets: Ifix Garden Route Mall; Coimbra Cycle Shop George; De Kaap Eiendomme Groot Brakrivier; De Dekke Spar. Apart from entering online this made the entry process much easier.
The Great Brak Grabadoo has again proven itself to be a family event where memories for a lifetime is created! The best way to end 2015 and prepare yourself for a brand new year!
