Outeniqua’s 2013 ace centre, Warrick Gelant, will make his Varsity Cup debut on Monday night when he runs out in the number 15 jersey for the Varsity Cup’s defending champions Tuks on Monday night for their clash against the University of Johannesburg in Pretoria.
Gelant played two years of SA Schools rugby and was a key member in an Outeniqua 1st XV that won 15 of their 17 matches. He also helped the South African Under-18 team to a Gold Medal at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in January last year.
Known as ‘Boogey’ in his school days for his electric footwork, Gelant finds himself in a fairly unfamiliar role at fullback. The former Kwagga played a handful of games at the back for the SA Schools team back in 2012, but otherwise he has played the majority of his rugby in the midfield.
He is a supremely talented rugby player and a gifted athlete. A Varsity Cup debut at age of 18 is just one small step in the path to greatness for a young lad with loads of potential.
Tuks are favourites once again to take the title as they have a side littered with talent and impressive credentials. Joining Gelant in the Tuks colours is Rohan Janse van Rensburg (Waterkloof 2012), also an SA Schools centre, who made a name for himself in the Bulls Vodacom Cup team last year.
