This year once more saw the University Spot South Africa (USSA) Sevens taking place at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (George). It is the fourth consecutive year that the two day tournament takes place at the university’s picturesque campus, featuring some of the best student rugby seven players in the country.
A total number of 21 teams participated in this year’s tournament. The tournament’s pool phase commenced on Wednesday 04 December which was followed by the Knockout phase on Thursday 05 December.
All of last year’s winners were back to defend their titles. This included last year’s Cup winners – University of Stellenbosch (Matties); last year’s winners of the Bowl competition – the local side, NMMU George campus; and last year’s winners of the Plate competition – North West University (Potchefstroom campus); as well as winners of the Shield competition – University of Limpopo.
This year’s tournament proved to be full of surprises as most of the favourites and anticipated winners were defeated by the underdogs. This year’s Shield went to the Durban University of Technology (DUT) winning 31 – 26 against Vaal University of Technology (VUL); Bowl winners are University of Cape Town (UCT) winning 31 – 10 against Central University of Technology (CUT); the Plate was scooped up by North West University Potchefstroom (NWU PKKE) with 38 – 5 against NMMU George; and after a tough and nail biting Cup final battle the University of Pretoria (TUKS) came up victorious against last year’s winners Matties , final score 35 – 26.
