Community Market days to kick off next week

A series of Community Market Days to be hosted at Community Halls will kick off on Heritage Day, Tuesday, 24 September 2013.  These Market Days are follow up events to allow Entrepreneurs that attended Training during the week of 9 – 13 September a space to sell goods and services.

The Executive Mayor recently posted a challenge to the Local Economic Development office – given the large scale societal challenges of unemployment and poverty, how do we better utilise municipal assets and resources to create opportunities for our residents to access economic opportunity?

A plan was then devised to support and encourage entrepreneurship and start up businesses by means of training and the community based market days.

The Community Market days will take place in the following community halls:  George Civic Centre, Blanco, Pacaltsdorp, Conville, Thembalethu Community Hall and Zone 9 Hall, Rosemoore, Parkdene, Lawaaikamp, Touwsranten, Uniondale and Haarlem.

This initiative will see these facilities, at times under-utilised, turned into a community gathering and trading place.

Executive Mayor, Charles Standers says:   “This initiative aims to keep George money local by encouraging residents to support home grown, local entrepreneurs from within their own communities.  We are very excited about the prospects of these community market days, and it is in the hands of each community to make their own market a success.  George Municipality has committed to the market days for the remainder of the year, we hope that local residents will take up the challenge to continue with the market days in 2014.  We are also currently working with other role players such as the George Business Chamber and education institutions to plan 2014 as “The Year of the Entrepreneur” in George.  We understand that entrepreneurs are crucial to the growth of our economy, and ultimately job creation, and therefore Council wishes to provide support to these individuals within its mandate.”

Any individual or small business that wishes to sell goods or market their services to their community is welcome to contact their Ward Councillor, Ward Committee members or the LED office (044 802 2000).  These individuals or entities will be allowed the opportunity to participate in the market day at the community facility closest to their place of residence.
