George Golf Club newsletter

Greetings from Sandra and Jenny

The game of golf has lost a legend, rest in peace Seve.

Our Ladies at Home Day on Tuesday 10 May 2011 was a rip-roaring success, with 128 ladies from clubs across the Southern Cape joining us for the day. A very wet golf course, due to the weekend’s monsoon rain, challenged the ability of all players.

However, Esmé Orr and Michelle Kapp showed their local knowledge and won the Better Ball Stableford competition with 42 points. They also won the Raath Cup, as they were the highest placed George Golf Club ladies team in the tournament. Our grateful thanks to those working behind the scenes to made the day possible, as well as the generous sponsors. We are already looking forward to the Ladies at Home Day in 2012!

Next big event for our Ladies is their Club Champs, scheduled for Tuesday 31 May 2011.

Congratulations to

Breyten Meyer, who played in the Western Province Open at Westlake on the 25th to the 29th of April 2011 and finished 13th out of a field of 180 players. He went through to the Quarter finals in the Matchplay and came 6th and further celebrated a “Hole in One” on the same day! However, he unfortunately lost to Haydn Porteous.

Also to Derick Petersen Jnr who won the Big Easy tournament at Observatory with scores of 71 and 65, for a total of 8 under par. Derick will appear on SuperSport this week!

Nic’s News

The green side bunker ‘rebuild’ project is gathering momentum, with hole 1 being completed and the bunker on the 3rd green currently receiving attention. Thank you to all our players for your patience whilst this project takes place. We aim to keep disruptions at an absolute minimum. Please check the notice board in the Green Fee clerk’s office for instructions regarding bunkers under repair, or alternatively ask the starters if you have any queries.

Etiquette Corner

Please be advised that the balcony outside the club lounge is a designated No-Smoking area. Smokers are requested to use the smoking lounge at all times.

The George Traffic Department, in conjunction with generous sponsors Goodfellas and SAB, will be hosting an Alcohol Awareness Drive at the club during prize giving next week Wednesday. All players are welcome to make use of the complimentary breathalizer tests, and Goodfellas will drive you home free of charge if you are over the limit, on a first come, first serve basis. It’s going to be a very informative evening seeing just how badly those ‘Foamies and Coke’, or glasses of ‘unleaded’ affect our driving abilities. See you there!

The winter time sheet kicks in from the 25th of May 2011, with the afternoon field starting at 11:32 an ending at 13:10 daily. Please be sure to contact the club to confirm your exact starting time if you have a standing booking

Enjoy the read,
Sandra and Jenny
