Early morning showers and a bitterly cold wind could not dampen the festive atmosphere at the Outeniqua Bowling Club on 27 April as 84 players prepared to play their part during the National Barefoot Bowls day as initiated by Bowls South Africa.
The aim of this important day on the bowling calendar was to, not only raise funds for CANSA and Disability Bowls South Africa, but to set a new Guinness World Record for the most bowls delivered within one hour.
Words of encouragement by Mr. Lionel Esau, the mayor of George, added to an unforgettable and very special vibe within the clubhouse whilst Bevan Fortuin, former Springbok player and SWD Eagles rugby captain, also pledged his support to the day by entering his name to one of the teams.
A total number of 5 060 bowls were delivered between 12h00 and 13h00 and will add to the national total, which might just be a new record.
Barefoot bowls has an enormous part to play in growing bowls as a sport within South Africa! Perhaps it’s time to “loosen up” a bit in order to accommodate the upcoming, younger generation in what is known as a sport for the elderly alone. This was the overwhelming conclusion by all after play.
The day at Outeniqua was made possible by Brandhouse, Halfway Toyota, Mr. Meat, and Secunda Sales. Anyone who would like to join this wonderful game, may contact Jaco Visagie at 0824534465 or firstname.lastname@example.org
