George Golf Club news…

Greetings from Sandra and Jenny

In Memoriam
It is with great sadness to hear that Lew Irwin has passed away after a short illness late last week.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, 19 March 2011 at 10am at the Methodist Church in Heatherlands. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.

The club’s Annual General Meeting is scheduled to take place on Thursday 14 April 2011 in the Club Lounge. This is an important date on our calendar and we ask you all to please diarise the date and take the time to make your voice heard. Official notice of the meeting, as well as the agenda for the night will be sent out in due course.

In the Navy
Each year the SA Navy play their annual Championships at George Golf Club and they will be arriving next week (20 – 24 March 2011). We look forward to welcoming them. They will be playing in the morning field of each day. In view of this we suggest that you check the tee sheet ahead of time to confirm your starting time, as there may be some impact on the tee sheets during their visit. Wednesday morning field is particularly important.

Mazars George Open
The inaugural Mazars George Open takes place on Sunday, 27 March 2011. Green fees for the 36 holes of golf will be R200 p.p. which includes lunch in between the rounds. Handicaps of plus to 6 gain automatic entry into the event (field size capped at 72 players), whilst golfers with handicaps of 7 to 9 will be placed on a waiting list. The entry list is up on the notice board at the club, with the closing date for entries being Wednesday, 23 March 2011 at Midday. Many thanks to our generous sponsors, Mazars George, for their financial assistance in hosting this event!

From the President
Fellow members!

I still think it would be great if we had a little livelier member’s correspondence for the weekly Club Newsletter. I know it would make Sandra & Jenny’s job a little easier!

Last week in the passage I was having a chat with our manager when one of our members came up to her after his round and said: “Sandra, I have never seen the course in worse condition!”

Basically, he claimed to have lost 6 balls only a few meters off the fairway because of the severity of the semi-rough. He did not take kindly to my suggestion that he should hit it on the fairway!

I went around the course that afternoon with a critical eye on the conditions: The tees were all level and tidy, the fairways were immaculate and the greens were true. A lot of rough had been cut down and cut back over the previous week. In short, I think the course is in great condition and Sandra, Nic and his team deserve heaps of praise, not unfair criticism!

By the way, I played with a high handicapper that day. He hit the ball far and wide, missing fairways by meters and tens of meters. He did not lose one ball!

Fellow member, what you should have said to Sandra was: “Gee, I had a really tough day out there today, the semi is really punishing!” Remember, the course staff are doing their best under very tough conditions; the hot humid weather is making the Kikuyu grow fast and tall, so balls sink lower than it normally would. Always remember, the course is the same for everyone! Play it as you find it and enjoy!
