With so many conflicting voices, books, religions…does the Bible have any answers? Here’s an opportunity to get to the source and have CHRISTIANITY EXPLAINED.
Some people are struggling to make life work because they are missing the most important piece of the puzzle – Jesus Christ. The reason is many have false assumptions today about Him. Many reject Jesus because of “religious baggage” they are carrying because of a bad experience they’ve had at a church or with someone who claimed to be a Christian. Others reject Him without even considering the facts. Others don’t reject Him entirely, they just say that Jesus was a good teacher, a historical figure, an important person in history, a good example – and that’s all. The problem with that thinking is that Jesus claimed to be more than a good teacher or a moral person or a great prophet. Jesus claimed to be God and is God. You can’t ignore that. You have to deal with that.
In his book “Mere Christianity” C.S. Lewis says, “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him : “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” Jesus is the man you cannot ignore. You need to look at the facts and make a decision about Him for yourself.
That’s the reason why St Philip’s Church is running Christianity Explained. It is an informal course for people who would like to investigate Christianity (or even just brush up on the basics). The idea is “Let’s put aside all our religious baggage, get back to the Bible and explore who Jesus was, what He came to do and what it means to follow Him.” You don’t need to know much about the Bible, you won’t be asked to sing, read, pray or answer questions. But there will be time to investigate the truth and ask your own questions.
Christianity Explained is for anyone who wants to investigate Christianity informally with others. Whether you have previous experience of Church, Christians and the Bible, or none at all, this course is for you. Everyone is welcome – from the most sympathetic Sunday schooler to the convinced atheist. We will respect your background, culture and beliefs. Tell us as little or as much about yourself as you feel comfortable.
What goes on? A light supper is provided at the start of the evening followed by a talk on the theme for that week. Then over coffee the groups discuss any questions that have arisen, and the evening ends at about 8:15pm latest. You don’t have to speak in the group. Anyone is welcome just to come and sit and listen.
The course starts on Wednesday 16 February 2011 at St Philip’s Church (cnr. Saasveld Rd & Van Kervel Str, Loerie Park) from 6:30-8:15pm and runs every Wednesday for 6 weeks. There is NO CHARGE and you don’t have to bring anything – everything will be provided for you.
