Marathon mania is set to take GEORGE by storm at the SA Marathon Championships, presented by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, on Sunday, February 13.
The male and female open category champions at the event in George will each collect R20 000 respectively.
The main race will start at 05h30 opposite the main entrance of Mountview Resort (York Street), with the route following Beach Road towards Pacaltsdorp, where the athletes will turn left into Mission Road. From there they will run straight into Hibiscus Street, turn right into Rose Street, left into Haydn Street and then straight towards Beach Road where the athletes will return to York Street for the next lap. It is a 3 x 14km lap route.
The programme also includes a 10km run (06h00 start).
This year a couple of changes was made to the usual Marathon Championships rules and regulations – firstly the event will only be open to South African Citizens and secondly all athletes had to qualify as per ASA guidelines.
Here is a couple of Senior athletes to look forward to: David Ngakane (ACNW), Coolboy Ngamole (ACNW), Benedict Moeng (AGN), Riana Van Niekerk (AGN), Adinda Kruger (AGN), Odwa Tunyiswa (CGA), Rene Kalmer (CGA), Irvette Van Blerk (CGA) and Neo Molema (WPA).
Overall there will be R218,000 of prize money (excluding Incentives) up for grabs. R164,000 (42.2km), R42,000 (42.2km Team Prizes) and R12,000 (10km).
Athletics SWD has entered a Provincial Team (20) and Individual athletes (8).
